Music Festivals in Austin, Texas

travel makersAustin is the capital of Texas and one happening city, especially when it comes to music. There are a variety of annual music festivals that occur throughout the city. From electric dance music to free music from up-and-coming artists, you’ll find something for all music tastes. Here are just a few that you should check out:

South by Southwest: Arguably the most famous music festival in all of Texas, South by Southwest, better known as SXSW, is a 10-day festival that started out in 1987 as an independent festival where unsigned bands and artists would try to impress labels and publishers. Now it is a combination of film, music, and technology. Six out of the ten days are devoted to music, where younger, lesser-known artists can take the stage, while there are also big name performers like Usher and Justin Timberlake putting on performances as well. There is also a film festival that runs for all 10 days and 5 days of Interactive, a series of panels about technology. Performances are held around many venues in Austin. This year, the SXSW music festival takes place from March 10th to March 19th.

RedGorilla Music Festival: If you’re looking for a free music event that features up-and-coming independent artists, the RedGorilla Music Festival is for you. It started out nearly 15 years ago under the name DreamScapers Artists Showcase. This year, it takes place from March 13th to March 18th, the same time as SXSW, so you can mix it up between big name artists and smaller, independent talent. The event will be all along 6th Street. Past performers at the festival who have also found success include Imagine Dragons, Macklemore, Foster the People, and Kendrick Lamar. So if you head down to this free event, you could really say you saw someone before they were famous.

Euphoria: This music festival is a combination of electronic dance music, live bands, camping, and dining. With an emphasis on connection and a friendly community, the festival takes place at Carson Creek Ranch. Attendees who camp can participate in various workshops as well as a morning yoga class. An afternoon yoga class set during the music is also available for all attendees. There are also interactive art exhibitions, and even live marriage ceremonies! Past and upcoming performers include Wiz Khalifa, Pretty Lights, and Zeds Dead. If you’re looking for an electronic scene with a sense of artful togetherness, this festival is for you.
