Located along the Adriatic Sea just on the other side of Italy, Croatia is littered with some of the best kept secrets in Europe. For the nature lovers, Krka National Park has over 109 square miles of rivers and waterfalls to explore. For the history buffs, The Fortress of Klis in central Croatia is a must see. Let’s take a closer look at these two destinations in today’s Travel Guide!

Krka National Park
Located near the southern tip of Croatia, Krka National Park is home to some of the most beautiful waterfalls and swimming holes in southern Europe. The most famous, Skradinski buk, is over 1,000 feet long and 300 feet wide. The water here is completely clear, with a waterfall feeding it from the top and another flowing out to sea at the bottom. Any time spent here is worthwhile for those that love a natural scene. For accommodations, you can’t go wrong with Hotel Skradibnski Buk. Quaint and decorated in a simple European style, this hotel puts you just a mile from the park.

The Fortress of Klis
For all the history buffs, you simply cannot visit Croatia without visiting the Fortress of Klis. Located on a bluff overlooking the village of Klis, the fortress has history dating as far as ancient times. Since the year 9 A.D., the Klis has been occupied by everyone from the Romans to the Knights Templar. The Fortress has even been used as a filming location for the HBO hit Game of Thrones, standing in for the city of Mereen! A true history buff would plan their trip around the annual battle reenactment held at the Fortress, which runs during the last week of July, and reenacts a battle between the Ottoman empire and the local Uskoks. The town of Split is just a few miles away. As for accommodations, you can’t go wrong with Heritage Hotel Antique.
